Irvin Kerschner (1923-2010)

OK… first Leslie Nielsen and now Irvin Kerschner. Now many don’t know him, but he was the director of arguably the best of the 6 Star Wars episodes, namely Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. He also happened to direct a guilty pleasure of mine, Robocop 2. Yes, the one with the psycho kid wielding a folding submachine gun.

As a kid, I preferred Return of the Jedi (yes even the Ewoks) but as I’ve grown older, I appreciate ESB more for being much more dramatic and not dispensing on characterization. So now it’s actually my favorite. ROTJ is now 2nd :) .

Anyhow, thanx for being a part of my nerd childhood sir. Godspeed.

And don’t call me Shirley…

Leslie Nielsen has died and the world is less funny somehow. I of course, know him as Lt. Frank Drebin from the Naked Gun series. Years later, I realized he was also in Airplane! where as Dr. Rumack health pharmacy online he uttered his most famous line:

Rumack: Can you fly this plane, and land it?
Ted Striker: Surely you can’t be serious.
Rumack: I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.

Ahhh… classic. Good laughs too. Thanx Mr. Nielsen! Godspeed.

Super Robot Chogokin Shinken-Oh and S.H. Figurarts Shinken Red

So I’ve been a Super Sentai fan for a long time. I’ve also always wanted 2 things from Super Sentai: decently proportioned Sentai mecha and decently poseable Sentai heroes. And now Bandai has finally answered the call!

As part of their Super Robot Chogokin line, Bandai has announced the Shinken-Oh from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, the 33rd entry in the Super Sentai series. It’s coming in February 2011 @ 5,040 yen. It’s non-transformable. However, it’s poseable and it has very nice proportions. Just compare it to the ‘normal’ DX Shinken-Oh. Transformation has always been a gimmick to me anyway.

The other release is part of the expansion of Bandai’s S.H. Figuarts line with the announcement of the release of Shinken Red! It’s also to be released in February 2010 and priced @ 3,360yen. Finally, a poseable ranger figure!

Much like the S.H. Figuarts Kamen Rider and Ultra Act series, the proportions are on the thin side. But these things are so poseable it’s ridiculous. Price is also on the high side and 34 Sentai teams (there’s currently 34) x 5 figures on each team (on average) is 170 figures. That’s er… a lot of figures @ 3,360yen each. Still… I can imagine having 34 red rangers. How cool will that be?
