WIP : Great Wall Hobby 1/72 F-14D ‘VF-31’ Pt.2 – Construction

Looking st the rear fuselage I found a problem. The port side is OK with crisp panel lines…

However, the formation lights are not molded onto the starboard side. That’s quite an omission.

To help the stabilizers fit better I cemented a small section of styrene tube inside the fuselage.

The kit provides both swept and unswept options for the wings. I went with the swept as is usual for me.

Unlike the Hasegawa and Fujimi offerings, the intakes fit very well on this kit.

Pre-painting is required for the intakes and I based the pattern on how it appears on Buno 164603.

I really like how the intakes fit and how detailed they are.

The engines are sufficiently detailed with the interior of the exhaust made up of four curved parts that come together.

Now we come to the landing gear where GWH’s tendency to over-engineer rears its ugly head. I really think it doesn’t need to be this detailed for 1/72 scale.

The nose gear looks very good when assembled. But it was an exercise in patience to put it all together.

I added shims to get rid of the step that resulted from putting the wings together.

Strips of plastic plates were also used to help with alignment.

The wings are made up of too many parts to have proper alignment though. I did what I can and will rely on putty for the rest.
