Painting begins with pre-shading in my usual off-black.
I then painted the various panels with different colors.
I’m modeling ‘Felix 101’ during the Tomcat Sunset ceremony and she was painted in a two-tone gray with distinctive red tails. The bottom called out for FS36375 and I used Aqueous H308 Gray FS36375 for it.
Painting in successive thinned coats let’s me control how much of the marbling coats will still show.
The result is a patchy finish.
The topside gray is FS35237. I used Real Color RC237 Medium Gray FS35237. The work can get a bit tedious as the opaqueness can take quite a few coats.
Before I forgot, I attached the probes around the nose at this time. Nowadays I’ve found that it’s easier to just attach the antennas at this point to prevent any sort of paint damage if I attached them after painting.
I check my work after every few coats of paint.
I don’t think it’s quite opaque enough. I figured the aircraft would have gone through a cleaning up before the retirement ceremony so It wouldn’t be as typically as patchy as deployed F-14s.
So I sprayed even thinner layers of FS35237 to control the result.
Much better I think. Subtle enough for the scale but you can still sense an ‘unevenness’ to the finish.
Next was the black skunk tail on this Tomcat. Normally I would use an off-black but in this case, but I decided on a gloss black this time using Tamiya X-1 Black.
