This is the new decal sheet I managed to procure. I know it’s just the markings but I just didn’t want my kit to be ‘too wrong’. At this point, the most glaring mistake left on my build is the lack of the additional two machine gun ports on each wing of the IIb. But further research indicated that initial Mk. IIb Hurricanes were delivered in the eight-gun configuration which means my build is not technically wrong. In any case, I decided to go ahead and finish this.

I started with a preshade and filled the panel lines in random colors of gray, brown, yellow and blue.

I first painted the wheel wells in silver using Tamiya X-11 Chrome Silver. The result looks too grainy though so I think this will be the last time I’ll be using it. Then the whole bottom is painted with Real Color RC290 RAF Sky FS34424. For this particular Hurricane the nose section is a different color using Tamiya XF-23 Light Blue. As usual, I went with light coats and slowly built up the opacity.

The top is a two-color scheme of a medium brown and medium green. I masked off the bottom then proceeded to paint the brown with Aqueous H72 Dark Earth. A fairly diluted coat was done at this point.

I then masked the pattern using blu tack so the demarcations can be slightly feathered.

The medium green goes on using Aqueous H73 Dark Green.

I then sprayed more coats of each color to build up the opacity. This was done free hand as the light coats don’t really affect the demarcations lines.

The various colors I painted on over the preshade as a base color helps to tint the green and brown, making them look less uniform across the various panels.

Once I was happy with the color scheme I masked off and painted the gun ports.

Checking my work I ended up also adding more opacity to the bottom to match the upper surface.

The various subassemblies were painted separately.

Decals were next and this was done over a gloss coat.

The decals were very nice and with the help of Mark Softer, managed to conform very well over the surface details.

The roundels were thankfully one decal instead of requiring stacking. Weathering is next…
